What does a prosthodontist do?

A prosthodontist specializes in the restoration and replacement of teeth. They are experts in creating dental prosthetics, such as crowns, bridges, dentures, and implants, to restore both function and aesthetics to a patient’s smile. Prosthodontists also manage complex cases involving facial and dental abnormalities, TMJ disorders, and oral trauma. Their advanced training enables them to address both the functional and cosmetic aspects of dental care, ensuring that patients achieve optimal oral health and a natural-looking smile.

How is a prosthodontist different from a general dentist?

While a general dentist provides a wide range of routine dental care, including cleanings, fillings, and basic restorations, a prosthodontist has advanced training in the restoration and replacement of teeth.

After dental school, prosthodontists complete a few years of additional, specialized education focused on complex dental issues, such as creating and fitting dental prosthetics and managing severe dental conditions. This expertise makes them particularly skilled at handling complicated cases that require a higher level of precision and aesthetic detail than general dental treatments typically offer.

Dr. Lefler and our Hot Springs Village dental team offer both general and specialty services, and we’d be happy to create a custom treatment plan that meets your unique preferences and needs!

The Board Certification Process

Board certification for a prosthodontist is a rigorous process that demonstrates a dentist’s expertise in the field of prosthodontics. To become board certified, a prosthodontist must first complete an accredited dental school program and then undergo an additional three years of specialized training in prosthodontics.

After their training, they must pass a series of comprehensive written and oral exams administered by the American Board of Prosthodontics (ABP). These exams assess their knowledge, clinical skills, and ability to provide high-quality patient care. Achieving board certification is a significant accomplishment, reflecting a commitment to the highest standards of care and a dedication to continuing education in the field of prosthodontics.

Dr. Lefler is a board-certified prosthodontist. Upon completing his DMD, he pursued additional specialized training in prosthodontics and successfully passed the board certification exam. At present, he is one of the only two board-certified prosthodontists in Arkansas and has completed recertification, which must be done every eight years.
